Saliba Alsterarkaden

A former ship's captain, Hanna Saliba came to Hamburg from the Syrian port city of Latakia in the early 1970s and made the Hanseatic city his second home. With his restaurants, he broadened the city's culinary horizons and introduced generations of Hamburgers to Levantine cuisine.

The kitchen
The kitchen tells of Syria and the eastern Mediterranean: mezze to share, grilled lamb, fish, aromatic rice dishes and finely seasoned vegetables form the heart of the menu. Everything is marked by great craftsmanship and thrives on the balance of herbs, spices and freshness.
What you should know

At a glance

Saliba is far more than an oriental restaurant. Host Hanna Saliba was already putting Levantine cuisine on the map in Hamburg back when hummus, tabbouleh and falafel were still considered exotic here. Today, the restaurant in the Alsterarkaden is one of the city's classics.

The setting

Right in the middle of the Alsterarkaden, Saliba combines oriental elegance with Hanseatic composure. It's especially pleasant to sit outside with a view of the water – a spot where Hamburg suddenly feels like the Mediterranean.

Insider tip

The mezze remain the finest way into the house's cuisine. Those coming as a pair or in a larger group should order plenty of small dishes to experience the full diversity of Levantine food culture.
