Among Hamburg's Vietnamese restaurants, Quan Do Bistro is a gem. Chi and Lev Zubkov and their warm team serve authentic lunch fare at midday — Phở, chicken curry — while in the evening the Vietnamese kitchen is taken further, into a modern sharing-dinner experience that never denies its roots. Gratefully, he also has a few natural wines on offer, mixes drinks, or, if you'd rather, simply pours you a good cold Spaten Helles from Munich.“
On our evening visit we were won over by dishes such as mackerel Nuoc Cham, passion fruit salad, scallops in satay butter, delicate beef dumplings in Phở broth, grilled pork cheeks with grilled sticky rice. The plates for sharing arrive at the table one by one — sharing with the character of a set menu, and full attention given to each individual dish. Wonderful!
The minimalist room — bright and welcoming, with modern stools, handsome chairs and plain wooden tables — evokes traditional Vietnam. The action happens in the open kitchen at the back, while up front you sit comfortably, candlelight and all.
Vegetarian dishes are already on offer at lunchtime, and in the evening there's a separate menu of vegetarian options.
