Brücke

French-inspired bistro cooking with a soft spot for Austrian and German favourites. Calf's liver, suckling pig, topfenknödel or lamb on bean cassoulet are cooked here with remarkable consistency: classic, straightforward and without a hint of zeitgeist. The ingredients often come straight from the neighbouring Isemarkt.

What you should know

The setting

Right by the legendary Isemarkt (Tuesdays and Fridays, 8am–2pm). Starched tablecloths, Thonet chairs, art deco lamps and a restaurant packed to the rafters with regulars. Brücke combines Hanseatic warmth with French bistro charm and that increasingly rare sense of ease that only places with history can carry off.

The philosophy

Brücke isn't a restaurant that feels the need to reinvent itself. For almost four decades it has stood for reliability, hospitality and a kitchen that knows its guests. While trends come and go elsewhere, here the pleasure of good food and long evenings remains the one constant.

More

Few restaurants are as closely tied to Harvestehude as Brücke. Saved more than once, written off more than once – and still here. A Hamburg institution whose greatest quality may well be that it has stayed true to itself. Anyone looking for old Hamburg will still find a piece of it here.
